Our Pitch Construction Process
1. Site Assessment and Surveying
Every project begins with site meeting to discuss the requirements. We assess the condition of the site, including soil type, drainage, and existing surface conditions. This allows us to recommend the best approach for pitch construction to meet the Club’s specific requirements, including budget considerations.
2. Earthworks and Sub-Base Preparation
Careful earthworks form the foundation of a high-quality pitch. We use laser-guided grading equipment to create a level, consistent sub-base free from undulations and hollows. This ensures the topsoil maintains an even depth and allows for more effective drainage and consistent playing quality.
3. Drainage Solutions
We install extensive pipe drainage systems including main drains, lateral drains and slit drains to the agreed specification. This is done using a combination of excavators and laser guided trenchers.
4. Topsoil and Sand
Topsoil is carefully installed and laser-graded using low ground pressure equipment to prevent compaction. We then apply a sand layer using specialised spreaders to achieve even distribution and enhance surface stability.
5. Cultivation and Seeding
We use professional cultivation equipment, including spring tine grubbers, levelling bars, power harrow and stoneburriers to prepare the surface for seeding. Seeding is carried out in two directions using a dimple seeder to ensure even coverage and quick germination.

Pitch Drainage Solutions from Garry Flood Landscapes
At Garry Flood Landscapes, we understand that effective drainage is essential for a high-performing sports pitch in all conditions. Pitch drainage has been a big part of our work for the past number of years. Our staff are highly experienced in the installation of drainage systems and professionally carry out both small and large projects to a top standard and within required timeframe and budget.
Our Pitch Drainage Process
A well-designed drainage system keeps your pitch playable, durable, and free from waterlogging. We combine proven techniques with tailored solutions to maintain top performance year-round.
Primary Drainage Installation
Our pitch drainage process begins with primary drainage. This consists of the installation of a main drain connected to an outlet and lateral drains connected with fittings to the main drain. Depths, spacings and pipe sizes vary depending on the specification of the project.
Secondary Drainage Solutions
Seasonal Pitch Maintenance from Garry Flood Landscapes
We provide specialist pitch maintenance services to keep your sports pitch in top condition all year round. A well-maintained pitch not only enhances player performance but also reduces the need for major repairs and ensures a safe playing experience. Our maintenance approach combines expert knowledge, specialised equipment, and high-quality materials to deliver quality results.
Verti-Draining
Verti-draining is one of the most effective ways to relieve soil compaction and improve drainage. This process involves inserting small holes into the surface, allowing water, air, and nutrients to penetrate deep into the soil and reach the root zone.
Top Dressing
Top dressing involves spreading a selected sand layer over the playing surface to improve drainage, enhance surface consistency, and reduce thatch build-up.
Overseeding
Overseeding involves sowing new grass seed into an existing playing surface to thicken the grass cover and improve turf health.
Sand Spreading
Sand spreading is essential for improving drainage and supporting healthy grass growth. Our spinner spreaders ensure an even distribution of sand across the playing surface and maintains drainage systems.
Fertilising
Shockwaving
Shockwaving is a turf maintenance method that uses a specialised machine fitted with tines to break into the soil. This action creates deep fractures in the ground, relieving soil compaction and improving both water infiltration and root growth.
Scarification
Scarification removes the layer of organic matter (thatch) that builds up on the surface over time, which can choke the grass and prevent healthy growth.

Goalmouth Repair from Garry Flood Landscapes
The goalmouth is one of the highest-wear areas on any sports pitch. Constant foot traffic, goalkeeping and concentrated play lead to faster deterioration. Our expert goalmouth repair service provides a rapid solution to restore your pitch to top condition with minimal downtime.
Why Goalmouths Wear Out Faster
The goalmouth takes more wear and tear than any other part of the pitch due to:
- High Foot Traffic
- Soil Compaction
- Poor Drainage
Maintaining a strong, healthy goalmouth surface requires a tailored repair strategy that addresses these unique challenges.
Our Goalmouth Repair Solutions
We offer natural grass, astroturf and hybrid goal mouth repair solutions, depending on the requirements.
Natural Grass Goal Mouth Repair
We use high-quality, mature grass turf laid on a free-draining root zone to ensure rapid establishment and long-term stability. During this process we:
- Assess the damage and soil conditions before beginning repairs.
- Decompact, level and prepare ground for turf laying.
- Lay the turf grass and tie into existing pitch.
- Apply fertiliser to help the grass to root into the surface as soon as possible.
